US Clears The Way For Transferring Ex-Afghan Mi-17 Helicopters To Ukraine: Report

The U.S. State Department has approved the transfer of five Russian-made Mi-17 Hip helicopters that had belonged to the now-defunct Afghan Air Force to the Ukrainian armed forces, according to a new report from CNN. American officials also authorized plans by the Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian governments to send U.S.-made weapons, including Javelin anti-tank guided missiles, and other equipment to Ukraine. This is all part of a broader push by the United States and its allies and partners to bolster Ukraine's military capabilities ahead of a potential new Russian invasion, the prospects for which look ever more imminent.

Russia's Landing Ships Are Headed To The Mediterranean To Join A Growing Armada

The Russian Ministry of Defense has confirmed that six amphibious warfare ships that left the Baltic Sea this week are heading to the Mediterranean Sea, where they say these vessels will take part in naval exercises. Navy Sends A Message By Publicizing Guided Missile Submarine's Mediterranean Presence

The U.S. Navy’s Sixth Fleet has offered an unusual public disclosure of the location of USS Georgia (SSGN 729), one of four of the service’s converted Ohio class nuclear-powered guided-missile submarines, or SSGNs, as it conducted a brief stop near the island of Cyprus. These rare disclosures tend to occur at times of heightened international tensions. With the situation in Ukraine quickly approaching an outright crisis, it’s likely that the Navy intended for this glimpse at Georgia to serve as a signal to both allies and Russia that the United States has a highly capable presence in the region that can reach out and strike over long distances with little risk to itself.

Russia’s Black Sea Fleet has six active submarines. But Ukraine’s navy is a token force. After the Russian boats hunt down and sink Kiev’s sole frigate as part of a possible, wider war in Ukraine, what else would they do?

Lob missiles at Ukrainian targets on land, probably.
